About Me

Hi, My name is Sam and I am a Year 5 student at Mt Carmel School. I wanted to participate in the Summer Blogging as I was with my mum when Rachel came to talk to her class. I asked my mum if I can join. Finally she agrees and I am very keen to journey through with so many children around New Zealand.

Whale Watch

I am able to add words to a text so it makes sense.
Whale Watch

WHALE WATCH
Here is the story Max told about the time he went whale watching.
When I went on board the Whale Watch boat, Makawhio, I kept telling myself that I might not see a whale. But I really wanted to. I wore my dolphin necklace for good luck.
Lester is Makawhiu's skipper. He took us five kilometres offshore. The water out there is one and a half kilometres deep. It's full of plankton and fish and squid – all the things that whales like to eat.
I kept looking at the sea, but I couldn't see anything that might be a whale. Then I heard Lester talking on Makawhiu's radio. The skipper on another boat was saying that there was a whale not far away. Lester wrote down the whale's position on his map. Makawhiu'sengines started up, and we were off – whale spotting.
When Makawhiu stopped, Lester put a hydrophone into the water. Under the sea, whales make squeals and clicking sounds that the hydrophone can "hear". But Lester said he wasn't picking up any sounds. That meant that the whale was on its way to the surface. Either that, or it was asleep, deep under the water!
We waited . . . and waited . . .
Then, close by, we heard a rush of air. A long, smooth, grey sperm whale was lying in the water close to the boat! Every time it let out a breath, a shower of mist and water rushed out of its blowhole.
The whale floated in the sea like a giant rubber raft. Only one-third of its body was above the water, but once, just for a minute, I saw the whale's wrinkly eye. The whale made me want to laugh and cry at the same time. I wished I could touch it. I wished I could watch it all day.

(Text abridged).

Read "Whale watch" pages 14-19 in School Journal Part 1, Number 1, 1998. Then answer these questions.

a)
Max said he wore a necklace for good luck. What was the good luck he was hoping for?
To actually see a dolphin.

b)
Why did Lester put the hydrophone in the water?
So he could hear the noise the whale was making.
c)
Why did Lester take the whale watchers five kilometres offshore?
Because the water out there was deep and it was full of plankton and fish and squid all of the things the whale likes to eat.

d)
What are two possible reasons for the hydrophone not picking up any sounds?
i)The whale was on it’s way up to reach the surface.
OR
ii)It was asleep deep underwater.

e)
The words "We waited …and waited…" have been written in large print to make them stand out. What might this tell us about how Max was feeling?
Frustrated and Impatient.

f)
What was the first clue Max had, that a whale was at the surface near the boat?
Then, close by, we heard a rush of air. A long, smooth, grey sperm whale was lying in the water close to the boat!
g)
Describe a time you felt like Max.

I had to wait for an appointment at the doctors and I had to wait for 1 hour.

On Frog Pond

LEVEL 3
I am able to add words to a text so it makes sense.

On Frog Pond
This task is about adding words to a  text so it makes sense -  This will also show comprehension and understanding of text.

Read the text and put in the correct word.
It's early morning on frog pond. As the sun rises, light sparkles on the water (1).    All sorts of  pond animals are waking up. A 2) busy day is beginning.
At the edge of the (3) pond, a little green frog sits on a lilypad (4) in the water. He
is hidden here among the 5) floating plants. He keeps very still and very quiet (6).
His big, bulging eyes are watching. He's watching the (7) dragonflies. He's watching for
slugs and worms. He's watching (8) for flies. This little frog is hungry for food (9).
Someone else is hungry too. A dragonfly hums quietly(10) above the water. She is a fierce
hunter, looking (11) for insects. She hovers near a clump of grass (12). She can fly in
any direction, even backwards and (13) sideways. Like the frog, she has very
big wings (14). Suddenly she spots a fly crawling up a lilypad (15). She swoops down
like an arrow and grabs the (16) fly with her powerful front legs. Gripping it
quick (17), she munches away at it with her sharp mouth (18) parts.
The little frog has seen all this happening (19). He turns very slightly. He's ready to pounce,
but (20) he keeps very still. He hopes that the fly (21) will take off towards him
when she's finished eating (22). He hopes she won't notice him sitting
still in (23) green among the pondweed. Soon she flies away (24).

Maxine's Science Experiment 2013

Thursday 16th May 2013
Science Experiment 2013
Purpose:- To see if plants can survive in a plastic bag?
Answer:- Yes. Plants can survive in a plastic bag.
Aim <-----What do plants need to grow?
Answer:-Water, sun and plenty of room.
Goal:-
Method:
1.Add Soil-

2.Plant the seeds-

3.Pour two teaspoons of water into the pot-

4.Fill a bottle cap and put it in the middle of the pot-

5.Zip the plastic bag-

Mrs.Ringwood made a test and she left hers open.
Results: After seven days nothing happened.
Mrs.Ringwoods results were:

Conclusion:Mrs.Ringwood and my group used the same equipment. But the reason why Mrs.Ringwoods plant grew is because she unzipped her plastic bag. The most important ingredient is that a plant needs air.

Blood Brothers

Blood Brothers

Thursday was a great opportunity for us year sevens to go to Selwyn college to watch blood brothers. We had rides from Miss.G. I got a ride from Mr.Gleason. My other classmates got a ride from Mrs.Gleason. And two classmates of mine had a ride with Miss.G. We all raced to Selwyn College. But Miss.G unfortunately won. We went inside and waited, but while we were waiting, we were looking around and the PLACE was HUGE!. We waited for five minutes inside. But we went outside for fresh air and sat around a round table. We waited until someone came and called us to come inside. They showed us the bathrooms and where we will be sitting. So I leaded us to the seats.
Act one tells us about a Mrs.Johnstone already giving birth to four children. Her husband walks out on her. She was working for a couple named Mr and Mrs.Lyons. Mr and Mrs.Lyons couldn’t abort a child. But Mrs.Johnstone was having twins and she told Mrs.Lyons all about it.
Act Two was telling how Eddie and Mickey are now fourteen years old and they bump into each other again. But four years later Eddie leaves for university, but not before Eddie encourages Mickey to ask out Linda. During Eddie’s absence around the 1980’s, Mickey is made from redundant from his factory job. He soon discovers that Linda is pregnant, and they decide to get married. Eddie returns at Christmas ready to party and have fun with Mickey,Linda and himself.

I really enjoyed that theatre of the Blood Brothers. It captures my attention. I hope we could act it out somedays.

Mother's Day Description

My Mother

My mother is so special to me. Even though she doesn't have time with my brother and I she still expects us to do what she asks.I do things that make her upset but I know she still love me back. She takes good care of me even though i’m a little bit stubborn. She encourages me to read because she always said that it will help in my daily life. She was also the person that made realise that I should always love my brother for who he is. My mum is my best friend in the whole wide world and I will never ever have another mother.
