About Me

Hi, My name is Sam and I am a Year 5 student at Mt Carmel School. I wanted to participate in the Summer Blogging as I was with my mum when Rachel came to talk to her class. I asked my mum if I can join. Finally she agrees and I am very keen to journey through with so many children around New Zealand.

The Bush Walk

I've made it to the top”!

“I've made it to the top” said Jim. He was proud of himself. Jim was an adventurous kind of person. He was exploring Mount Everest. He was accompanied by his friend named Jack. They were two best friends who had a lot in common.

All of a sudden Jack had a challenge for Jim.“I've got a challenge for you Jim”. Jack exclaimed. “And what is that challenge Jack?” Questioned Jim. “Why don’t we race each other to the bottom of the hill and who ever wins, will be the champion of climbing this huge mountain”. Answered Jack. “Okay that sounds alright. But are you sure your up for this Jack”. Asked Jim. “Because you look tired from climbing up this huge mountain.”  “No i’m alright Jim.” Responded Jack. “I can handle this. I will be fine.”

To their surprise, their race began. Jim was well ahead of Jack. Jack was puffed from climbing that big mountain. Then he stopped.  Jim had won the race. For Jack, he was tired and puffed out behind Jim.

My Two Favourite Saints

S
aint Cecilia is the patron saint of Musicians. Her feast day is celebrated in the 22nd of November. She is also known for getting killed because of her belief and her religion. Saint Cecilia is also a symbol of her opinion that music is an necessary part of the liturgy.
Saint Patrick’s is the patron saint of Ireland. When he was 16, he was captured from his home and taken to Ireland as a slave. He lived there for 6 years. Then he escaped and returned back to his family. The feast day of Saint Patrick is celebrated on the 17th of March. The day of his death.

LEARN: -  TO IDENTIFY AND USE THE TYPE OF SENTENCES
WEEK 3
When Ginetta was eighteen years old, her parents asked her to drive the neighbour’s three children to the smugglers in the Val d’Intelvi, who would take the children to neutral Switzerland.  The had not seen the children’s Jewish father for awhile.  They didn’t know what had happened to him. On the outside, his wife, Julietta, seemed very calm, very quiet, but Ginetta’s parents could tell Julietta was terrified.

WEEK 2
Ginetta’s parents, her Jewish mama, Rosa, and her Catholic papa, Dario, both physicians, loved travel and culture.  They took Ginetta all over Europe and to Africa.  With them she visited museums, theatres, and operas - even the Parthenon in Athens!  At home they read the great classics and talked about how stories of the ancient Greeks and Romans helped them to understand their own lives.

LEARNING INTENTIONS:  We are learning to identify and use adjectives and adverbs.   (Make your own copy)

Adjectives are describing words.    Adjectives describe nouns.  Highlight or change the font colour of  all the adjectives in the story below.  The first adjective has been done  for you.

On Saturday morning I woke up early. It was a  beautiful day.   All
the grey clouds had gone and left a clear, blue sky. The sun was
shining brightly. I decided to surprise Mum by making her
breakfast in bed. I crept quietly down the stairs so she wouldn't
hear me. I poured some cornflakes into a bowl. Mum doesn't like
soggy cornflakes so I put the milk into a little jug. Then I got a big
brown egg from the fridge and put it in a pot to boil. I put a piece
of bread in the toaster. By the time the egg had cooked the toast
was cold but I didn't think Mum would mind. I carried the tray
carefully upstairs.
"Surprise!" I said, as I walked in the door. Lazy, old Mum was
still asleep but she soon woke up. She said it was the best
breakfast surprise she had ever had but next time she wants
me to wait until eight o'clock before I wake her up.

My Fraction Problem

Tuesday 3rd September 2013
L.I- I am learning about division problems that has fraction as the answer.
Can you solve my problem?
I have 4 kiwifruits. I want to share it to 5 people.
How many kiwifruits do they have altogether?
I cut all of the kiwifruits into fifths.

1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4=4/5
Now each person has 4/5 altogether.

Cross-Country 2013

Wednesday 14th August 2013

Cross-Country Recount Writing
On Tuesday the 13th August 2013, Saint Pius X was having cross-country.  It was a big day for Saint Pius X children. The bell rang. It was time for us to get ready. I tried to fake my headache but I was in hard luck. So the school gathered in the tennis court and get ready for the race.

Firstly, the 12 and 13 years old ran. When Miss G banged the blocks I started jogging. When we got to the bottom of the hill I started to sprint up the hill. Then I got tired. I ran past Eneasi and Vililatai. I stopped. But they caught up with me again. So I was behind. Dawn caught up to me. So we decided to power walk together. Even though we were tired we power walked as fast as we could.

Finally we came to the finish line and I finished 2nd for the 12 yr old girls. I was so proud to come 2nd.

Finally, it was time for the junior syndicate cross-country. They were so nervous. While I was watching them, I was sad because I had to leave and the race was not finished yet. But I was happy in the inside because I came second in the twelve year old girls run.  It was a tiring experience for me.

My Book Review 2013

Choose a word to describe your book.

Title:My Story Castaway           Author: Bill O’ Brien
Date started: 29/07/13    Date finished: 02/08/13
This book was.... Adventurous.
What was the book about?
My book is  actually a diary written by Samuel Abraham Clark. His parents died in a fire. He travelled from New Zealand to Australia. When he was on the boat he met Mr Harrington. Mr Harrington gave him a little present. It was his father’s diary. When he reached Australia, he hopped off the boat and thanked the Harringtons for all they've done for him. Then he hopped on another boat to London. The captain of the boat was Captain Thorbourne. Then a strong wind came. It kept coming until it ripped the boat apart. They were shipwrecked for days.
TO BE CONTINUED....

What did you like about the book?
What I liked about the book was that it was quite adventurous. I had a lot of Self-Questioning while I was reading this book. I also liked the way the book was set out.

What was your favourite part of the book?
My favourite part of the book was when he travelled at sea for 45 days in a ship named “DUNDONALD” and he was still alive. They were shipwrecked by the strong wind that blew them apart.

How many stars would you give this book? Colour the stars.
(5 – Excellent, 1 – Poor)A five star book.

Level 4 Cloze Activity

I am learning to add words to a text so it makes sense.
LEVEL 4 CLOZE ACTIVITY

The following piece of writing has words missing.
Read the whole piece of writing first to get an idea of what it is about.
Fill in the gaps so that the piece of writing makes sense.
Write only ONE word in each space.
You can cross out and change answers as you go along.

The largest of all flying creatures is the albatross, which can have a wing span of 3.5 metres.
The bill of this huge seagull is long and powerful.
The albatross's wings (1) is the southern oceans of the ocean (2) where it
may sometimes travel great ways (3). One albatross, found near the Chilean
ocean (4), had a special identification tag fastened on (5) its neck which
had been put on (6) in New Zealand only 12 days earlier. After (7) that
brief time the bird had only  (8) 4800 kilometres, an average of 400 kilometers (9)
daily – an amazing feat of endurance.
Albatross’s (10) are capable of flying at speeds higher  (11) than 90 km/h. Their
outstanding ability to fly (12) and glide far better than any
other  (13) bird has led to them being named  (14)
'the prince of soaring birds'.
They eat (15) mainly on squid, fish, shrimp, and
other (16) creatures that are found near the surface (17)
of the sea. They also swoop under  (18) on scraps thrown overboard from ships.
Then (19) they will follow a ship for two (20) days.
Albatrosses will alight on the deep  (21) surface, but only when it is right(22).
They visit land in the breeding way (23) for a brief time. Adult birds go (24)
out at sea for two or twenty (25) three years.
